How to use the alphabet randomizer

    1. Press Spin, tap the yellow wheel or press the space bar. The wheel turns, and the letter it stops on appears in the big window.
    2. To leave letters out, tap them under Exclude letters. Their slot on the wheel gets punched through and they won't come up. Tap again to put them back.
    3. Choose All, Vowels or Consonants, and ABC or abc for capital or lowercase letters.
    4. Turn on No repeats to use each letter once. Drawn letters get a pencil tick, and when they have all come up, the next spin starts a new round.
    5. Set Letters per spin to draw up to 10 different letters at once.
    6. Showing it to a class? Press Full screen. The space bar, Page Down or a presenter remote spins again, and Esc exits.

Ways to use a random letter

    Classroom warm-ups
Spin a letter and ask for an animal, a country or a verb that starts with it. The whole class sees the same letter on the board.
    Phonics and spelling
Draw vowels only for short-vowel practice, or draw five letters and have students build as many words as they can.
    Category games
In many party games every answer in a round has to start with the same letter. Turn on No repeats so a game never lands on the same letter twice, and leave out hard letters like Q, X and Z.
    Word games
Draw seven letters and see who can make the longest word.
    Names and ideas
Stuck naming a character, a team or a project? Let a random letter decide where to start.
    Drawing and writing prompts
Draw a letter, then sketch or write something that begins with it.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the alphabet randomizer really random?

Yes. Each letter is chosen with your browser's built-in cryptographic random number generator, and every letter still in play has the same chance. The letter is decided the moment you press Spin; the turning wheel is there so everyone can watch it land.

Can I leave out certain letters?

Yes. Tap any letter under Exclude letters. It stays on the wheel, greyed out with its slot punched through, so everyone can see it is out, and it will never be drawn. Tap it again to bring it back.

How do I stop letters from repeating?

Turn on No repeats. Each letter then comes up once per round and gets a pencil tick on the wheel. When every letter in play has been drawn, the next spin starts a new round. You can also press New round at any time.

Can I pick more than one letter at a time?

Yes. Set Letters per spin to any number from 1 to 10. Letters drawn in the same spin are always different.

    Which letters count as vowels?

A, E, I, O and U. Y counts as a consonant here. If you want Y with the vowels, choose All and exclude the consonants you do not need.

Does it work on a projector or interactive whiteboard?

Yes. Press Full screen to fill the screen with the wheel and the result. Then spin with the space bar, Page Down, the forward button on a presenter remote, or a tap on the wheel. Sound is off until you turn it on with the Sound button.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free and there is nothing to sign up for. Everything runs in your browser, and your settings are saved only on your device.
